I am just starting out after finishing college and want to get a basic kit together to make documentary films. I have a certain project in mind in Mongolia and would like to get recommendations on equipment.

I already got a Mac and Final Cut studio.

For camera I am looking at the Sony Z1E.
I'd also need mics, probably 1 unidirectional and 1 cordiod
Possibly a lapel mic, but I am not sure.

I won't be bothering with lighting as I am intending to do it in strictly observational style. Also I won't use a tripod, it's just too cumbersome and restricts movement too much.

Is there anything I missed?

Thanks for any advice.

If you don't want cumbersome lighting rigs and tripods, at least consider these alternatives. Throw in a reflector/diffuser kit to augment your natural lighting (a good one will fold up and fit in a backpack). Also, consider a tripod alternative... like a G-clamp with tripod screw... or a monopod. At the very least a bean bag to rest your cam on when lying down, shooting from a moving vehicle etc.

Hope these tips help. I personally find the pocket sized clamp invaluable for camera mounting. Even mounted a super8 cam to a motorbike for some POV stuff with one once.

The more I read the more it seems if you can film in HD you should as it provides a lot more opportunities to get your film distributed once it is made. Not essential by any means but worth considering. Hopefully you will get some experienced filmmakers in to help you.
